Security Service Edge (SSE)
Security Service Edge (SSE) is a cloud-based security approach that secures access by users, devices and locations to web, cloud and SaaS applications. SSE bundles security functions at the so-called service edge, i.e. closer to the user and independent of classic network perimeters. Typical components are secure web gateway, cloud access security broker, zero trust network access and data loss prevention.
The approach is particularly relevant because work today frequently takes place outside traditional corporate networks. Users access cloud services from different devices and locations, while data is distributed across many applications. SSE helps to assess access in context, enforce policies consistently and reduce risks such as shadow IT, malware, data outflow or insecure web usage. An important foundation is Zero Trust, because trust is no longer derived from the network location.
Security service edge is closely linked to Cloud Security and SaaS Security. While cloud security describes the protection of cloud environments in general, SSE focuses on secure access and policy enforcement at the edge of the security architecture. Organizations frequently use SSE to standardize security controls for hybrid work, cloud applications and mobile users.
