Backup as a Service (BaaS)
Backup as a Service (BaaS) is a cloud-based operating model in which backup functions are provided as a service. Organizations back up data, applications or workloads via an external or centrally managed platform instead of operating the entire backup infrastructure themselves. BaaS can cover local systems, cloud workloads, SaaS applications and hybrid environments. The approach reduces operational effort, but does not replace the responsibility for clear recovery objectives and security requirements.
Typical components of backup as a service are automated backup schedules, central management, encryption, monitoring, retention rules and recovery functions. It is important that the service does not only copy data, but also provides transparency about successful backups, errors and recoverability. In security strategies, BaaS complements measures around Data Protection and Cloud Security.
The benefit of BaaS lies above all in scalability, standardization and relieved operations. At the same time, organizations must check where data is stored, who has access, how long backups are retained and how recoveries are tested. For resilient organizations, backup as a service is therefore an operational building block, but no substitute for emergency planning, Incident Response and practiced restart processes.
