Recovery Time Objective (RTO)
Recovery Time Objective (RTO) is the maximum tolerable period of time until a system or service must be available again after an outage. While the Recovery Point Objective describes the permissible data loss, the RTO defines the permissible duration of the outage.
Here, too, the target value determines the architecture: an RTO of days allows recovery from classic backups, hours require prepared standby systems, and minutes require highly available or actively mirrored environments with automated failover. A realistic RTO therefore demands more than good intentions: tested restart plans, clear prioritization of systems and documented dependencies – a system is only truly available when the services it depends on are also running.
Since downtime has direct consequences for revenue, productivity and compliance, the RTO translates business impact into concrete technical requirements. Not every application needs the same RTO – staggering by criticality keeps effort and risk in balance.
