Recovery Point Objective (RPO)

Recovery Point Objective (RPO) is the maximum tolerable amount of data loss between the last consistent backup point and an outage. Put simply, the RPO answers the question: How much data may be missing in an emergency?

The metric directly determines the technical implementation: an RPO of 24 hours can be achieved with daily backups, an RPO of minutes requires continuous replication, and an RPO close to zero requires synchronous mirroring. The lower the value, the higher the effort and costs – which is why the RPO is not set across the board but per system: a financial system, a production application and an archive have very different requirements.

The RPO is therefore not a purely technical quantity but a business steering variable derived from the question of which data loss is economically and regulatorily acceptable. Together with the Recovery Time Objective (permissible downtime), the RPO forms the target framework of every disaster recovery plan.
