IT Cost Allocation
IT Cost Allocation is the cause-based assignment of IT costs to services, products or organizational units according to defined rules. It answers the question of which recipient bears which share of common IT spending, for example on infrastructure, licenses, cloud resources or staff costs.
The typical process: actual costs from the general ledger are grouped into cost pools, distributed to recipients via Allocation Keys and condensed into rates per unit of service. An example: €120,000 of network costs are distributed by data volume; division A bears 40% (€48,000), division B 60% (€72,000). Good allocation is transparent, built on measurable quantities and accepted by the units that are charged.
Cost allocation is the methodological basis of showback and chargeback models in IT Financial Management. Without reliable allocation, internal prices and charges remain open to challenge; with it, costs can be traced back to their source in the general ledger.
