Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS)

Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS) is the provision of restart capabilities as a service: in an emergency, systems and data can be brought back up in an external or cloud-based environment of the provider.

To this end, protected workloads are continuously replicated to the standby environment; in an emergency, an orchestrated failover takes over operations until the organization's own infrastructure has been restored. The advantage lies in shorter recovery times without investing in a completely self-operated secondary infrastructure. Decisive for quality are clear answers to three questions: Which workloads are protected, which dependencies exist between them, and how regularly is the restart actually tested?

DRaaS must be distinguished from Backup as a Service (BaaS): BaaS backs up data for recovery, DRaaS additionally keeps operational systems ready for continued operation. Both are frequently obtained as part of Managed Services, where the provider is also responsible for testing and operation.
