Amortized Costs
Amortized Costs are a cost view that distributes prepayments and commitments evenly or consumption-based over the period of use, instead of showing them in the month of payment. It shows which costs economically belong to a period.
In the FinOps context, the amortized view is contrasted with the pure cash view, which shows invoice amounts at the time of payment. An example: an annual commitment of €120,000 appears amortized at €10,000 per month and is assigned to the actual consumers. This stabilizes forecasts and plan-actual comparisons and makes internal allocation fairer, because those who prepay are not charged once in full. The open FOCUS standard (FinOps Open Cost and Usage Specification) defines uniform cost columns in billing data for this purpose. The view is used primarily in Cloud Cost Management.
Amortized costs must be distinguished from accounting Depreciation, which distributes fixed assets according to accounting standards; amortized costs are a management and reporting view of ongoing contracts and commitments.
