Allocation Metadata (Tags & Labels)

Allocation Metadata are identifiers such as tags, labels and account or project structures that assign cloud and IT costs to those who cause them, such as teams, products, environments or cost centers. They turn anonymous resource costs into attributable costs.

In practice, organizations define mandatory tags such as cost center, product, environment and owner, supplemented by naming conventions and automatic checks when resources are created. Costs without a valid assignment are shown as unallocated and systematically reduced through follow-up work. The FinOps framework lists the maintenance of this metadata as a core practice; it takes effect above all in Cloud Cost Management.

The quality of allocation metadata determines how reliable distribution, charging and optimization are. This becomes particularly clear with Shared Costs, which can hardly be split on a cause basis without clean tagging.
