Chargeback

Chargeback is a charging model in which IT costs are passed on to business units, cost centers or business entities according to the cause. Unlike pure reporting, cost transparency becomes an actual financial settlement. Users or organizational units not only see which IT services they consume, but also bear the corresponding costs in their budgets. This raises cost awareness and creates incentives to use resources more efficiently.

Chargeback is typically based on service catalogs, consumption data, cost models and clear allocation keys. Cloud resources, licenses, infrastructure services or standardized IT services, for example, can be charged. It is important that the rules are transparent and accepted: if cost models are too complicated or data is not reliable, discussions about fairness and accuracy quickly arise. For structured charging processes, IT Charging and Billing is an important field of application.

Chargeback is closely linked to IT Financial Management. While showback initially makes costs visible, chargeback turns this transparency into an actual allocation of costs. The approach is particularly suitable for organizations that want to manage IT more like an internal service provider. In addition, KPIs help to regularly assess cost efficiency, utilization and service quality.
