IT Asset Management (ITAM)

IT Asset Management (ITAM) is the discipline that deals with the complete lifecycle of all IT assets in an organization. Assets include hardware (such as computers, servers and mobile devices), software (licenses, applications) and other IT resources (e.g. cloud instances or peripherals). The aim of IT Asset Management is to systematically track and economically manage all assets from planning and procurement through operation and maintenance to retirement.

In concrete terms, this means answering questions such as: Which devices are in use, where are they located, who uses them, are the licenses compliant, when are replacements due? ITAM gives the IT department transparency over its asset inventory and enables better decisions – for example in budget planning, license negotiations or risk assessments (replacing older devices before they fail). Another aspect is cost management: ITAM helps to identify unused resources (e.g. software licenses that are paid for but not used) and thus save costs.

Modern ITAM tools often integrate with the CMDB to bring technical and commercial information together. Overall, IT Asset Management ensures that investments in IT assets are used optimally and that compliance requirements (such as license terms) continue to be met. Suitable ITSM software helps to manage such processes centrally and document them traceably. A reliable basis for this is clean data flows and Data Integration.
