IT Operations Management (ITOM)
IT Operations Management (ITOM) is the management and monitoring of the entire IT operating environment – infrastructure, applications and IT processes – to ensure reliable and efficient operations. While ITSM focuses on service processes and customer orientation, ITOM traditionally handles the technical operational tasks in the background.
These include monitoring systems (servers, networks, databases) for availability and performance as part of Availability Management, capacity management (planning sufficient resources), backup/recovery and general maintenance. The goal of ITOM is to reduce outages, respond faster to technical problems and ensure stable, high-quality IT services.
In many organizations, ITSM and ITOM interlock: an alert in monitoring (ITOM) creates a ticket for Incident Management in the ITSM system; conversely, data from the CMDB helps IT operations understand dependencies. Approaches such as AIOps (AI for IT operations) analyze operational data and predict faults proactively. ITOM covers administrative processes (system checks, patching), hardware and software support and end-user services.
Overall, ITOM ensures a sound technical basis for the services – without it, even the best-organized ITSM cannot deliver good service. A reliable basis for this is clean data flows and Data Integration. Suitable ITSM software helps to manage such processes centrally and document them traceably.
