Configuration Management Database (CMDB)

The Configuration Management Database (CMDB) is a central configuration database that stores all important information about an organization's IT infrastructure and its dependencies. The CMDB manages so-called Configuration Items (CIs) – these can be hardware components (servers, network devices, etc.), software, databases, virtual machines or any other relevant IT component.

For each CI, the CMDB holds details such as name, location, attributes and relationships to other CIs (e.g. “Server X runs on hypervisor Y” or “Application Z depends on database Q”). The CMDB is often referred to as the “heart” of an ITSM solution, as it provides a comprehensive data basis for many ITSM processes. For example, it supports Incident Management and Problem Management in root cause analysis (“Which other systems are affected?”) and Change Management in the impact analysis of changes (through insight into dependent components).

It is important that the CMDB is always kept up to date and accurate – this requires clear processes for recording changes to the infrastructure. A well-maintained CMDB contributes to stable IT services, as it creates transparency and makes it possible to better understand risks and interdependencies in a complex IT environment. Suitable ITSM software helps to manage such processes centrally and document them traceably. A reliable basis for this is clean data flows and Data Integration.
