Service Level Management (SLM)
Service Level Management (SLM) is the ITSM process responsible for agreeing, monitoring and continuously meeting service level agreements (SLAs). SLM ensures that the performance targets defined in the SLAs (e.g. availability, response times) are actually achieved and that both parties – service provider and customer – are regularly informed about service quality.
The tasks of Service Level Management begin with negotiating realistic SLAs: in coordination with the customer, achievable service targets are defined that meet business requirements but can also be delivered by IT. SLM then continuously monitors the measurement data (e.g. using monitoring tools or ticket statistics) and prepares reports on SLA compliance. In the event of deviations or imminent non-fulfillment, SLM intervenes – for example by triggering escalations or initiating improvement measures.
In addition, Service Level Management holds regular review meetings with the customer to discuss service quality and adjust the SLAs where necessary. Ultimately, SLM acts within ITSM as the link between IT and business units or customers, ensuring that IT services are constantly tied to the agreed expectations and evolve in line with business needs. Suitable ITSM software helps to manage such processes centrally and document them traceably.
