SaaS Backup
SaaS Backup is the independent backup of data from software-as-a-service applications. This can include emails, files, calendars, collaboration content, user information and configurations. The aim is to be able to restore business-critical cloud data even if it has been deleted, overwritten, damaged or encrypted in the production system.
Many SaaS providers guarantee the availability of their platform, but do not automatically take on every form of customer-specific data backup. Recycle bins, version histories and short recovery windows do not cover all scenarios. Causes of data loss include operating errors, faulty synchronization, compromised accounts, malicious insiders or ransomware.
The basis is the shared responsibility model: the provider is responsible for operating the platform, the customer for their data. SaaS backup must therefore be distinguished from SaaS Security, which addresses the protection of applications and access, while backup ensures the recoverability of the content. Typical workloads are Microsoft 365, Google Workspace or Salesforce. SaaS backup is operated either in-house, as Backup as a Service (BaaS) or as part of Managed Services.
