Release Management

Release Management is the ITSM process responsible for bundling approved changes into releases and introducing them into the production environment in a controlled way. A release is a package of one or more changes (e.g. software updates, new features, configuration changes) that is rolled out together. Release Management plans the timeframe and content of a release and monitors its implementation. The goal is to deploy new or changed systems in a controlled manner with as little disruption as possible. This includes activities such as detailed release planning (including tests, rollback plan, etc.), coordination with the teams involved and, for major changes, user training where required.

In practice, Release Management is closely interlinked with Change Management and configuration management – it forms the procedural interface at which changes are transferred into operations after successful approval. Good Release Management reduces the risks associated with changes by ensuring that incompatibilities or errors are detected in advance and that only tested components go live.

As a result, it contributes significantly to the stability and quality of IT services, especially in environments with frequent updates or complex software landscapes. Suitable ITSM software helps to manage such processes centrally and document them traceably.
