Digital Experience Monitoring (DEM)

Digital Experience Monitoring (DEM) is the measurement and analysis of the digital user experience from the users' perspective across endpoint, network and application. The aim is to detect performance problems before they are reported and to quickly narrow down their cause.

DEM combines several measurement methods: synthetic monitoring, which regularly performs test accesses to applications, real user monitoring, which evaluates actual user interactions, and agents on endpoints, which record device state, Wi-Fi quality and resource utilization. Added to this are path analyses that make the latency and packet loss of each network segment visible. This makes it possible to distinguish whether a fault arises at the endpoint, in the local network, at the internet provider, in the cloud provider's network or in the SaaS application itself.

DEM is related to Network Observability, but directs its view to the users' experience rather than to individual network components. In IT operations, it provides data for proactive troubleshooting and shortens the analysis of reported problems at the Service Desk. DEM complements Endpoint Management with an end-to-end view and is increasingly part of SASE platforms.
