Cloud Backup

Cloud Backup is the backup of data, applications or system states in a cloud environment. The aim is to protect business-critical information against loss, manipulation, operating errors or outages and to be able to restore it quickly when needed. Unlike purely local backups, the backup data is stored in cloud storage or on cloud-based backup platforms. This increases scalability and availability, but requires clear security, access and retention concepts.

An effective cloud backup concept takes into account recovery objectives, encryption, access protection, retention periods and the separation from production systems. It is particularly important that backups are not only created regularly but also tested. Only in this way can it be ensured that data can be restored completely and within the required time in an emergency. In the context of Cloud Security, cloud backup is therefore one of the fundamental measures for availability and resilience.

Cloud backup is closely linked to Data Protection and Cyber Resilience. While data protection describes the protection of the data as a whole, cloud backup focuses on the recoverable copy. Organizations should also check whether backups are protected against ransomware, stored immutably and managed separately from compromised identities.
