IT Cost Management

IT Cost Management is the systematic planning, analysis, control and optimization of IT costs. The aim is to make budgets, actual spending and the business value of IT services transparent. This includes costs for infrastructure, applications, licenses, cloud resources, staff, service providers and internal services. The term is closely related to IT Financial Management, but places particular emphasis on cost control and economic management.

Effective IT Cost Management answers questions such as: Which services cause which costs? Which cost centers use which services? Where are there savings potentials without jeopardizing service quality or security? To this end, financial data, consumption data and service data are brought together. With IT Financial Management, this information can be structured, analyzed and used for planning, forecasting, benchmarking or charging.

IT Cost Management becomes particularly relevant when IT spending grows strongly or changes dynamically due to cloud, SaaS and hybrid infrastructures. Without clear cost transparency, savings potentials often remain hidden or are sought in the wrong place. The approach therefore creates a basis for well-founded investment decisions and better communication between IT, finance and business units. For budgeting and forecasts, IT Budget Planning and Forecasting is a central building block.
