Helpdesk

A Helpdesk is an older term for an IT support hotline or unit that focuses primarily on quickly resolving acute IT problems. Essentially, the helpdesk is the predecessor of the more comprehensive service desk. Helpdesk staff receive fault reports from end users (e.g. by phone or email) and try to fix them immediately, often with the help of predefined solutions or FAQs. The focus is on reactive support: resetting passwords, solving printer problems, fixing software errors, etc. – in other words, mainly first-level incident handling.

Organizations today sometimes use the terms helpdesk and Service Desk synonymously, but there are differences: a helpdesk is usually limited to first-level Incident Management, i.e. resolving immediate faults, while a service desk covers a broader range of services and is more strategically oriented. Modern helpdesks are often equipped with service desk functions, such as a Ticketing System, self-service options and knowledge bases. Overall, a well-organized helpdesk helps to resolve end-user problems efficiently and ensure user satisfaction. Suitable ITSM software helps to manage such processes centrally and document them traceably.
