Insider Threat
An Insider Threat is a risk that originates from persons with legitimate access rights within or around an organization. These can include employees, former staff, service providers or partners. Insider threats arise both deliberately and negligently, for example through data theft, sabotage or insecure behavior. What is particularly critical is that insiders frequently already possess knowledge of systems, processes and protective measures. As a result, such incidents are more difficult to detect than external attacks.
Effective countermeasures combine behavioral analytics, access controls, clear processes and awareness. The operational implementation is frequently referred to as insider threat management: it creates transparency about user activities, prioritizes risks, preserves evidence and initiates targeted countermeasures. For organizations, insider threat is therefore a topic at the interface of security, HR, compliance and leadership culture. An important foundation is Identity Security, because identities and permissions frequently form the entry point for attacks. Data Loss Prevention also plays an important role when sensitive information must not flow out uncontrolled.
