CapEx and OpEx
CapEx and OpEx are the two fundamental categories of business spending: investments in capitalizable assets (capital expenditures) and ongoing operating expenses (operational expenditures). The classification determines whether an expense is capitalized and spread over the useful life or recognized immediately as an expense.
In IT, the purchase of servers or capitalizable in-house developments are typical CapEx items; they are spread over the years of use via Depreciation. SaaS fees, cloud consumption, maintenance and managed services, on the other hand, are OpEx and are charged directly to the period. The shift to cloud and subscription models structurally moves spending from CapEx to OpEx, with consequences for balance sheet ratios, cash flow profile and the way budgets are managed.
The classification is governed by accounting standards, such as IFRS or national GAAP (e.g. HGB in Germany), as well as internal capitalization policies. The distinction is important for cost models because it determines when and in what amount costs flow into service costs and charging.
