Backup Repository
A Backup Repository is the storage location where backed-up data is kept for later recoveries. Its properties directly determine how secure, performant and recoverable backups actually are.
Possible storage targets are disk systems, object storage, dedicated backup appliances or tape media – often staggered in several tiers for fast operational recovery and long-term retention. Quality criteria include sufficient scalability, enough throughput for large backup and restore volumes and, above all, hardening against manipulation: separate credentials outside the central directory service, minimal access rights and immutable storage for defined periods.
Especially with ransomware, it becomes apparent whether a repository is more than additional storage – attackers regularly try to destroy the backups first. A hardened, isolated and quickly usable repository is therefore a supporting building block of Ransomware Protection and the operational basis of every backup strategy.
