Supervision (Communications Surveillance)
Supervision, in the compliance environment, is the ongoing monitoring of digital communication for rule violations, risky content or anomalies relevant to supervisory authorities. Unlike archiving, supervision does not primarily aim at storage, but at the active review and assessment of communication.
It is mandatory above all in regulated industries such as the financial sector, where supervisory requirements demand verifiable control of business communication. In practice, supervision processes combine rule-based filters and lexicons with risk-based sampling and, increasingly, machine learning in order to filter relevant messages out of large volumes. Review workflows with escalation levels, the four-eyes principle and complete documentation make the review auditable.
The challenge lies in the balance: filters that are too broad produce hit volumes that cannot be processed, filters that are too narrow miss real violations. Supervision thus makes operational compliance tangible – as an ongoing process at the interface of business units, compliance and IT.
