Metadata Backup
Metadata Backup is the backup of information that describes the structure, context and relationships of data. Depending on the application, this includes permissions, labels, folder structures, schema information, versions, ownership assignments or relationships between objects, for example. Without this metadata, restored content may well be present, but it loses its original classification or usability.
Especially in SaaS and collaboration systems, metadata is an essential part of the application state. A complete recovery concept should therefore check which metadata can be captured via the available interfaces and correctly reconstructed during a restore. The scope and recoverability of metadata can differ significantly from platform to platform.
Metadata backup therefore complements structured Data Management. For recovery planning, it is crucial to consider data and its context together instead of backing up only files or records in isolation.
