ISMS (Information Security Management System)

An ISMS (information security management system) is the structured framework with which an organization manages information security: policies, processes, roles and controls that are meant to permanently ensure the confidentiality, integrity and availability of information.

Core components are a policy issued by executive management, a systematic risk analysis, technical and organizational measures derived from it, clear responsibilities and a continuous improvement process with internal audits and management reviews. Important for classification: an ISMS is not a software product but a management system – tools support it, but replace neither processes nor responsibility.

The most widespread standard for establishment and certification is ISO 27001; in Germany, the BSI IT-Grundschutz is also established, and regulations such as NIS2 de facto presuppose a functioning ISMS. Establishment and certification preparation are classic fields of IT Security Consulting.
