Hyperscaler Independence

Hyperscaler Independence is an architecture or operating strategy in which critical data and recovery functions do not depend exclusively on the same hyperscaler as the production environment. The aim is to avoid a shared failure domain and to remain capable of acting even in the event of disruptions, misconfigurations or access problems within a large cloud platform.

In the backup context, this can mean keeping backup copies in an organizationally and technically separate environment. Separate identities, administration paths and access rights as well as a tested export and restore process are important here. Hyperscaler independence is thus a specific form of vendor and infrastructure independence, but not automatically a multi-cloud strategy.

The approach connects requirements of Cloud Security with Business Continuity Management, because it addresses recoverability even when protection and production systems are not supposed to be available at the same time.
