Backup Monitoring

Backup Monitoring is the continuous monitoring of backup processes, storage resources and recovery relevance. The aim is to detect errors or deviations early, before they lead to missing or unusable recovery points in an emergency. Job status, runtimes, data volumes, retention, storage capacity, replication and failed backups, for example, can be monitored.

Effective monitoring does not only consider technical error messages. Unusual changes – such as unexpectedly small or large backup volumes, suddenly missing jobs or conspicuous deletion operations – can also indicate configuration errors or security incidents. Clear thresholds, notifications and escalation paths are therefore important for effective monitoring.

Backup monitoring supports continuous Data Management and improves recovery capability in Business Continuity Management. In addition, regular recovery tests should confirm that monitored backups are not only present but can actually be restored.
